Woolson Block

“The Woolson Block represents a significant step in the revitalization of downtown Springfield from its old machine tool factory days to a modern infrastructure that attracts and retains younger people to our beautiful downtown where they can live safely and affordably. Both the housing and commercial spaces will contribute directly to Springfield’s continued economic revitalization through property tax revenue, the provision of goods and services, and new affordable housing.”

Woolson Block is the rehabilitation of the prominent historic 150-year old Woolson Block in downtown Springfield.  The project is a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments with elevator access on two floors above the commercial space. There is a need in the State for more housing – especially 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in the Springfield area; and the preservation of a historic building was desirable to the community.

The project includes fifteen rental apartments, a four-unit transitional housing program with comprehensive social services for homeless and at-risk young adults with an apartment for a live-in supervisor, and four commercial storefronts. The apartments serve residents with incomes from below 30% of median to 60% of median. Eight of the apartments have project-based rental assistance, and there are three housing choice vouchers in the property.

The project has completed construction and is fully leased up in the housing portion.
